The streets of Guanajuato
Gorgeous Guanajuato exudes a charm that is evident as soon as you descend into the ravine it sits upon and spot the array of colourful higgledy-piggledy houses that nestle on its slopes. The narrow, cobbled callejones (streets) are best explored on foot where you may come across a pretty square alive with the sound of Mariachi music, a street vendor tempting you with a large serving of mango and chilli, the aroma of freshly made tacos and the mime artist who keeps the tourist entertained on the steps of the elegant Teatro Juárez.
The elegant colonial houses that dot the town hark back to the vast fortunes earned here in the 18th Century when the mines of the Sierra de Guanajuato produced the majority of the world’s silver. The imposing statue of ‘El Pipila’ that overlooks a stunning panoramic viewing point symbolises the town’s historical significance during the War of Independence.
Today local and international students give the town a youthful energy that makes Guanajuato a hard place to leave.
