The friendliness of a village with the convenience of a city best describes Salamanca, also known as the "Oxford of the Spanish world," reflecting its history as a seat of learning for those wishing to study the purest form of the language. Rising from the banks of the Tormes River, Salamanca is arguably Spain's most graceful city. Its golden medieval buildings, Renaissance palaces and soaring cathedrals are tucked away in the northeast corner of old Castile, far from tourist crowds, but just across the border from Portugal and only three hours from Madrid.
