Local Resources
Computer lab at Dilke House
Dilke House lies in the middle of a strong network of student resources for AIFS participants. Students often do not have to venture very far in order to find what they need to assist them in their academic endeavours.
For basic classroom supplies there is the Student Shop at the University of London Union (ULU). The Student Shop offers pens, folders and notebooks all emblazoned with the University of London logo, a must for any student studying abroad. There is also a wide range of University of London apparel to choose from, including shirts, sweaters and athletic wear. This is often student’s first stop as they get settled in to London student life.
For students in need of more specialized tools for their classes, the London Graphic Centre is just a 5 minute walk from Dilke House. The London Graphic Centre sells art markers, paint, sketchbooks and canvases. For all needs in between there is a large stationery shop (Paperchase) around the corner where you’ll find everything from stationary and cards to guidebooks and passport holders. On the first floor there is a large coffee shop with a wonderful view of the busy street below. Students spend their afternoons there studying and people watching.
If students are looking for a quiet café with fewer distractions they need look no farther than the local book shop, (Waterstones) which is right next door to Dilke House. Besides offering 4 floors of literature covering every subject imaginable, there is also a coffee shop in the basement floor. For more of a student atmosphere there’s the University College of London (UCL) union right down the street. The UCL’s Print Room Café is open until 10pm making it a fun, trendy place for students to hang out after class.
Students are often in need of local libraries to help them along with the studies. Fortunately Dilke House is situated in between a number of local libraries. Most famously within the vicinity is the British Library. It’s free to become a member and although you cannot check books out, the British Library provides a quiet, comfortable atmosphere for students to work. Also in the area are the Holborn and Camden Public Libraries where students can study and check out books if they become a member.
Travel often becomes just as important to students as their academics during a study abroad program. Since there are no classes on Fridays, students often come in on Thursday carrying luggage, intending to leave straight from their afternoon class. Dilke House is within walking distance of Euston and King’s Cross St. Pancras train stations making it quick and easy for students to embark on their weekend travel adventures.
